In asking whether the development of science will help the progress of man, we have to analyze what is the progress of man. Man's progress can be divided into two types, worldly and spiritual.
Secular progress can be called the improvement of the facilities of getting the necessary materials for the human race and the increase in the amount of goods consumed. Spiritual progress can be defined as the mental satisfaction that occurs in human beings and the development of virtues in human beings.
It is important to ask whether scientific progress has caused the growth of these two sectors and whether scientific progress has done more good or bad to mankind.
Scientific progress has taken place in several areas. Some areas are directly responsible for the material progress of mankind, while others are questionable.
However in general, scientific progress was made in relation to the needs of people, so it must be accepted without doubt that a great service has been done for the economic progress of man.
Apart from industrial work, scientific advancements have been of great service to agriculture and fisheries, to transportation and communication, to health and education, to housing and construction, and to many other needs.
Because of this, there is no doubt that the development of science is married to the material or economic progress of man.
It is a well-known fact that the development of matter has the scope to lead to the progress as well as the destruction of people. As science advanced, the weapons produced by the world increased in ferocity.
Scientific knowledge is mostly used to build weapons of war for warfare. Hundreds of thousands of people died in World War II as many as died in wars in the age of no scientific progress.
Scientific progress is responsible for the difference between the destruction of an archer's arrow and the noise of a missile weapon and the destruction of a high-speed jet.
Apart from the possibility of use in a war, it is a clear fact that if any other accident caused by a late error occurs in a place where these nuclear weapons are stored, it will lead to the destruction of the whole world.
Therefore, it is not possible to claim that accidents such as those in places where nuclear weapons are stored do not happen.
