 The Lighthouse of Alexandria



Considered one of the ancient wonders of the world, this lighthouse was built during the Ptolemaic Dynasty (247-280 BC) in ancient Egypt. It was located in the harbor of the small island of Pharos near the western tip of the Nile.


Between 120-137 meters in height, this was once recognized as the world's tallest building. It is also considered to be the third longest wonder among other ancient wonders of the world.


After the untimely death of Alexander the Great, Ptolemy Soter I became king of Egypt around 305 BC. Although the work on the lighthouse was started during his reign, his son Ptolemy II Philadelphus was  completed it. the lighthouse took 12 years to complete. The model of modern lighthouses was based on this lighthouse.
