Covering an area of 348,000 km, the entire coral reef ecosystem was declared a World Heritage Site in 1981.
It is the world's largest single structure made by living things and can even be seen from space.
Sadly, in 2016, it was discovered that 30% of the Great Barrier Reef's corals had died due to climate change.
The result was a rise in the temperature of the sea water. It has also directly affected other marine ecosystems.
